How To Care For Your Hardwood Cutting Board

A handcrafted hardwood cutting board can provide years of reliable service when properly cared for. Like any natural wood product, your board will perform best when cleaned, conditioned, and stored correctly.
These simple care guidelines will help preserve both the appearance and longevity of your board.
Do
- Wash the board by hand after each use.
- Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge or cloth.
- Dry the board thoroughly with a towel immediately after washing.
- Allow the board to air dry completely before storing.
- Condition regularly with food-safe mineral oil or board conditioner.
Do Not
- Do not place the board in a dishwasher.
- Do not leave the board soaking in water.
- Do not allow water to stand on the surface for extended periods.
- Do not use harsh chemicals or bleach-based cleaners.
- Do not store the board flat for long periods without airflow.
Daily Cleaning
After each use, wash your cutting board by hand using warm water and mild dish soap. Avoid soaking the board or allowing water to stand on the surface for extended periods.
After washing, dry the board thoroughly with a towel and allow it to air dry completely before storing.
Conditioning Your Board
Wood naturally loses moisture over time. Regular conditioning helps prevent the wood from drying out and helps maintain the board’s appearance.
We recommend conditioning your board with a food-safe mineral oil or a premium board conditioner containing beeswax.
How To Condition Your Board
- Make sure the board is clean and completely dry.
- Apply a generous coat of mineral oil or board conditioner.
- Allow the oil to soak into the wood for several hours or overnight.
- Wipe away any excess oil with a clean cloth.
How Often Should I Oil My Board?
- New boards: once per week during the first month.
- Regular use: about once per month.
- Dry environments: condition more frequently as needed.
If the wood begins to appear dull, dry, or lighter in color, it is time to reapply conditioner.
Proper Storage
Proper storage is important for preventing warping and maintaining the board’s flatness.
Recommended Storage
- Store the board upright in a cutting board stand whenever possible.
- Allow airflow around both sides of the board.
- Keep the board away from excessive heat sources.
Avoid
- Storing the board flat on a countertop for extended periods.
- Leaning the board directly against hot appliances.
- Placing the board near heating vents or direct sunlight.
Preventing Warping
Wood naturally expands and contracts as humidity changes. To help minimize movement, keep both sides of the board exposed to air whenever possible.
- Avoid exposing only one side of the board to moisture.
- Dry the board evenly after washing.
- Condition both sides of the board during maintenance.
- Use a stand or storage method that allows airflow.
Minor seasonal movement is normal for any hardwood product.
What About Knife Marks?
Knife marks are a normal part of using a quality cutting board.
End grain boards are especially valued because the wood fibers help absorb cuts more naturally, making the surface easier on knife edges and helping the board maintain its appearance over time.
Small knife marks and character changes are part of the natural aging process and are not defects.
Long-Term Care
With proper maintenance, a handcrafted hardwood cutting board can provide years of service. Simple habits such as hand washing, regular conditioning, and proper storage will help preserve both the beauty and performance of your board.
